INSTITUTION / Operating note
The key return register
Returning a key ends physical access. It does not close the work order.

01 / At departure
Record the number of keys and temporary credentials issued, the person receiving their return, and any access that could not be revoked before departure. Do not leave a service key with an unbriefed replacement shift. If the nominated recipient is absent, contact the site custodian. A locked box is not a recipient unless the work order names it.
02 / What stays open
Close physical access separately from the finding. An unresolved measurement does not justify retaining a credential. The field team may need another visit; that visit will require another authorization. Photographs of access arrangements belong in the controlled work file and are removed from public extracts.
03 / Completion
Return borrowed tools and identify temporary labels that must remain. Remove the rest. The host should be able to tell what changed without inviting the team back. Following the Merehaven assessment, the checklist now provides separate spaces for access returned, apparatus removed, and finding unresolved. All three may be true on the same day.
